2023 Kia Sportage vs 2023 Mazda CX-5

2023 Kia Sportage vs. Mazda CX-5

Overview

With so many SUVs to choose from, shopping for a new SUV can be a confusing process. Maybe you've considered the 2023 Kia Sportage or the 2023 Mazda CX-5. Although these two SUVs have some similarities, they also have some key differences, many of which make the Sportage the better choice. Let's take a closer look at DARCARS Kia of Temple Hills.

Engine Options

The 2023 CX-5 comes standard with Mazda's 2.5-liter SKYACTIV-G four-cylinder engine, which is capable of producing 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. The CX-5 lineup also offers a turbocharged SKYACTIV-G engine that generates 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque.

If you go with the Sportage, you'll get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 187 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. If you prefer a more eco-friendly option, Kia also has a 2023 Sportage Hybrid and Sportage Plug-in Hybrid available. Unfortunately, the CX-5 isn't available as a hybrid SUV. Also, the Sportage's maximum towing capacity is 2,500 pounds, while the CX-5's towing capacity maxes out at 2,000 pounds.

Off-Road Capabilities

Like the Sportage, the CX-5 gives you the option of equipping your SUV with a traction-enhancing all-wheel drive that comes in handy on wet surfaces and snow-covered roads. However, if you want to venture off-road, consider that the Sportage has a ground clearance of 8.3 inches while the CX-5's ground clearance only measures 7.6 inches. The Sportage lineup also offers two trim levels — X-Pro and X-Pro Prestige — that are optimized for off-road performance. Unfortunately, there aren't any such trims in the CX-5 lineup.

Interior

Look inside the CX-5, and you'll find seating for five, just like the Sportage. However, you'll also notice that the CX-5's cabin isn't as spacious as the Sportage. That's because the CX-5 only gives you 104 cubic feet of passenger space, while the Sportage gives you 108.5 cubic feet of passenger volume. The Sportage's total cargo space measures 74.1 cubic feet, while the CX-5's cargo space maxes out at 59.3 cubic feet.

In addition to more space, the Sportage's cabin also features more standard amenities than the CX-5's cabin. For example, all Sportage models feature heated front seats, which is an option even on the base trim. You'll appreciate the warmth on those chilly morning commutes. If you want a CX-5 with heated front seats, you'll have to pay extra for an upper trim.
