6 Tips to Make Parallel Parking a Breeze

One type of parking that troubles many drivers is parallel parking. Although it can take some time to master, this form of parking can allow you to park in an otherwise inaccessible space. As your Kia dealer, we'd like to give you a few tips to make your next parking experience a breeze. You can find more tips for student drivers here. Advice From Your Kia Dealer: 6 Tips to Help Make Parallel Parking Easy 1.    Find the Parking Space As you become more proficient at this type of parking, you can park in very small spaces. When you're improving your parking skills, it's best to choose a parking space that is at least 1.5 times the size of your car. This size parking spot provides plenty of room for any adjustments you need to make. The additional space also helps to give you confidence, as there should be sufficient space. more 2.    Take Your Time Take your time trying to park. As long as you're not blocking traffic, you can take as long as you need to park. Parking slowly can make the process seem simpler and more controlled. 3.    Line Up With the Car in Front Watch for traffic behind you, and move your car into position adjacent to the vehicle in front of the parking space. Allow two to three feet between your car and the parked car. Once you're positioned with your rear wheel adjacent to the parked car, you're in position. 4.    Reverse Shift into reverse gear and turn your wheel to the right. This will move your wheels toward the curb. Control your speed as you reverse, and watch the car before you to ensure you stay a safe distance apart. This is a part of the process that requires the most concentration. You'll need to regularly check your mirrors so you don't bump the curb, and you'll need to watch the rear of the car in front. 5.    Now Turn the Wheel to the Left Once you're almost in the parking space, you'll be approximately 18" from the curb. At this point, turn your wheel towards the left. This will help straighten your wheels and place you inside the parking space. 6.    Position Your Car in the Space Once you're in the parking space, you may need to adjust your car's position. It's essential to leave sufficient space in front of and behind your vehicle so you can quickly drive out of the parking space. You may need to move your car forward or backward to ensure you're correctly positioned. We're sure these tips will help with parking in the future. As with any skill, the more you practice, the easier and more fluid the process will become. If you'd like more driving tips, come and see us at DARCARS Kia of Temple Hills.
